How to play Sudunnit
Sudunnit is a murder mystery you solve like a sudoku. There are only a few rules, and you'll learn them in one case. Here's everything you need for your first solve.
The rules in short
- One person per rowEvery row and every column holds exactly one person, just like the numbers in sudoku.
- Every clue is trueEach suspect tells you where they were. "Beside" means the next cell in the same room.
- No empty roomsEvery room holds at least one person. Furniture nobody can stand on is hatched.
- Alone with the victimOnce everyone is seated, the murderer is the only person who shared a room with the victim and nobody else.
What kinds of clues are there?
Clues are short sentences in the past tense. There are a few kinds:
| On something | She sat on the armchair. The person is in that object's cell. If there's only one such object, the spot is settled at once. |
|---|---|
| Beside | He was beside a plant. The person is in a cell next to the object, in the same room, never through a wall. |
| In a room | They were in the kitchen. Any free cell of that room will do, as long as the rows and rooms add up. |
| In a row | She was in the top row. A clue can name a row or a column, of the whole board or of a room. |
| Not there | He wasn't in the sauna. A negative clue rules places out. Often it is the one that cracks the case. |
| With someone | She was in the same room as Aino. Two suspects' clues are linked: solve one and the other follows. |
| How many | Two people were in the library. A witness says how many people a room held. Count whether the group fits. |
Example: who killed Daniel?
The little case on the home page has four people and three rooms: a kitchen, a library and a sauna. Here is how it falls, step by step:
- Cecilia sat in the armchair. There is only one armchair, in the library on the second row. Cecilia is placed.
- Aino was in the kitchen, in the top row. The cooker takes one of the two cells, so Aino gets the only free one.
- Bruno was in the bottom row. Daniel was found by the left wall of the sauna, which spans two rows there. The bottom row is Bruno's, so Daniel is on the row above.
- Bruno has only one free column left, and its bottom cell is in the sauna.
- Daniel and Bruno are alone together in the sauna. Bruno did it. Case closed!
Tips for deduction
- Start with clues that fit only one cell, such as the only object of its kind.
- Mark ✕ on cells nobody can take any more. Note mode is made for this.
- When only one suspect still fits a row, that row is theirs.
- Remember the room rule: no room is empty, so the last free person goes where nobody is yet.
- Stuck? A hint explains the next step of reasoning, never the answer. The first hint each day is free.
